And looking at the specs, it's clear Sony wants 2 major lines: I agree the midrange is lacking, but low is where the numbers are, and high is where the margin is. They need both to survive.

He was talking about mirrorless cameras. And I don't think Sony has any high end compacts and I doubt that EVIL cameras at the moment price-wise compete with the entry level. But in the long term they probably will - and seeing how each manufacturer desperately tries to make his offers in that segment smaller and lighter, I'd say, mirrorless is the way to go in the future. Why, because Sony aims at the low market.

And Sony misses out on some important features that are nowadays common especially video. I kept all my lenses and hope SONY will bring a true competitor soon, but I am afraid they are not too interested in us advanced amatuers. Just like Apple makes more money with IPods than professional editing software.

Sony will keep us guessing and hoping, but really puts all the work and marketing into the cheaper lines that sell better with a better margin. The cheaper lines most definately do not sell at better margins. I'd wager a lot of money that Sony would love to have Nikon's or Canon's margins.

The problem is that the more advanced segment are pretty hard to crack for a newcomer - most of those users already own a Canon or a Nikon and they do gain very little if if at all by switching to Sony since they obviously do lack in certain know how which at this moment only Canon and Nikon possess since they are the only companies that have been seriously supplying the pro market for decades.

So the best strategy Sony has at the moment, is to build up market share from the bottom and then hope that users will eventually upgrade to more expensive models and not to Canon and Nikon ;-. So I don't think it's a case of "do not want", it's rather a case of "cannot do".

If you really need the AF speed of the 7D, I guess you'd better get used to the layout of Canon cameras - or switch to Nikon ;-.

Ummm A year ago almost no DSLRs had video.. The 7D looks like a nice camera. You wanted what was new on the shelf and that mattered more than "Beloved SonyMinolta" there is nothing wrong with that until you start making excuses and blaming Sony.

By Summer Sony may have a DSLR with video that can AF video unlike your 7D.. Things run in cycles.. If you chase new things you will find in 6 to 12 months someone esle will have something better. Its a nice camera.. Ya Sony just has two of the best FF cameras in the market that specialize in outstanding normal ISO and color.. I think this is more about you wanted a new camera now.. In terms of Sony it has the most complete feature set for DSLR still photography. Nothing they have produced since has it all. We face a future of "simplified" feature sets because people get "confused" and are assumed to be unable to learn. It was going to be 14 - 16 MP. Canon did indeed do a obvious premptive strike to continue the MP wars.

Now I'm more expecting Sony to put out more MP than the 7D, which has been their pattern. That could be considered cause for delay while they come up with a new sensor. I'd not be surprised at Sony going over 20MP. Of course, though it's pretty meaningless for real shooting. The ISO number wars are just starting. Pretty much no chance of otherwise. And Sony won't save the OVF in any way to do it.

And it won't give Sony any brownie points with the LV crowd either. It's now a yawner feature. And it will prove Sony flat out lied about LV and Video being something for the Consumer end only. And certainly not a Wow!

The lenses are more the limit for AF. And of no value to still photography, which will not be spared in any way to get it. All we don't know yet is how far downhill they are going to take still photography in their rush to put in this "feature" that most will not use. And regardless of what it is a me too catchup is how the reviewers will view it. As they rush on to list something new not in the Sony cameras. A given, but since so few know how to use even simple fill flash won't improve much.

With two 58's I could find use for it sometimes. All part of the death of still photography in the camera. Expect smile detect too. They better get this right as the next demand after video is likely to be that all DSLRs loose the OVF and Shutter. Electronic viewfinders for all is where the next generations will head.

And with that the shutter is no longer needed. And the MLU wars will end in here. I don't think anyone will call it a giant killer. You know I use live view on both my 40D and my D I just plain don't understand the useless statements so many make. Limited, yes, useless no! But with liveview I zoomed in and was able to focus on the hairs of the pronghorn. For me it serves the purpose of a on old fashioned ground viewing glass only better since you can zoom in.

It is not the lenses that are the limit, but rather the in-camera systems yes, the screw-drive lenses provide some limits, but that is not the biggest issue in my view. In particular, the lack of more useful sensors outside of the center sensor and the processing algorithms in the AF system.

AF may not be a "wow" feature, but it is critical to getting sharp photos in many situations. Not everyone is shooting a static subject. I have missed enough photos due to the lesser AF capabilities of the Sony AF system, and get frustrated each time it happens. Now, some of those cameras are pro cameras priced much higher than the A But, the 7D and Ds are not, and even the 50D had a better AF system with its more effective use of cross sensors.

Video may or may not be of any use to still photography, but it is going into most new DSLRs. How has the inclusion of video degraded the still image capability of any of the cameras that have it? Video is just a fact of life, whether most people use it or don't. Sony's problem, if it also wants to have video with audio, is that it can't do full time AF because of the AF noise its system generates with everything but the SSM lenses.

The new SAM lenses are about as noisy as their screw-drive predecessors. EVF's may replace OVF's in some cameras, but until they can resolve the blackout problem they are not a complete replacement, particularly in higher end cameras with faster shooting speeds. This is just wrong. Pumping up shadow areas and darker toned areas of an image will always increase noise in the image. Combining multiple exposures of the same scene does not. HDR will not work with every type of subject e. Also, it can be used with any ISO, whereas DRO is really limited to low ISOs if you don't want to get what many would term unacceptable noise levels in the boosted part of the image.

For a someone like me who uses so many manual focus lenses, live view is a godsend. I think Sony could have the highest percentage of full frame cameras sold.
