I am an expert at Re-selling items for profit on eBay. My go-to place is Goodwill followed by garage sales, then thrift stores and everything else in between. I also buy wholesale lots from Aliexpress or Alibaba and sell them in individual units for profit. But that's a whole nother topic: I'm a small scale seller and I make the buyer pay shipping. I scrounge for unused boxes and shipping material at my work or take advantage of the free priority mail boxes at the PO. Most big sellers can afford to lose a few bucks as they are turning more product though.

Have you considered sellings your items with Free Shipping? Items are proven to sell for more and more frequently when advertised as free shipping. I've found to have more success this way as it's a bit of a physiological thing, people see the word "free" even if its just 'free' shipping It's not really free since you included what you would charge for shipping INTO the overall price they're more inclined to buy.

But I suppose once you have a system down, it's pretty easy. I mainly sell jeans. True Religion, Miss Me, Lucky Brand, Silvertab, Rerock, Hudson, 7 for all Mankind, Citizens of Humanity and a few more are brands that I buy to resell. Brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren or even Levis jeans with an exception of a few different styles that you THINK would sell quite decently, don't.

Theh sell for NOTHING, well not nothing, not worth my time, or anyone's for that matter, those brands are just too saturated. While hunting, I have my smartphone in one hand with the eBay app open and search completed listings to see what sells and what doesn't.

But Im to the point that I don't even use that technique anymore, I just automatically know what brands to go for. I started researching by watching other flippers on YouTube, this helped me immensely take my first step. There's a few reputable youtubers who cover everything you need to know about Goodwill to eBay selling, its been quite a while since Ive watched these sort of help videos, but one name comes to mind.

A YouTuber named "Raken Profits'. He helped me a TON understand the dynamics of selling used clothes and evergthing else inbetween.

At this point, I know automatically what will sell or what wont. You develop an eye for things after so long in the business. I can clear a Goodwill store all mens shirts and jeans and woman's jeans in about 30 minutes, and theres at least articles of clothing Im sorting thru.

The reason Im able to do it so fast is because I have pre-knowledge. When you use the ebay app to research and make a decision if you should buy or not to resell, it takes up quite a bit of time, but as a beginner, you SHOULD be doing this. Wow, I wrote a ton more trying to edit this comment but it didn't save.

Anyway, after a while of researching, it becomes instinct. Theres a total of maybe 20 brands I look for, not a whole lot to remember.

Id say 20 hours of that 40 are spend actually hunting and driving from place to place. I genuinely enjoy product hunting too, so it doesnt even feel like work. The profits go to a good cause, you get your money, and the buyer gets what they wanted. Poor people shopping in thrift stores look for functionality, not name brand clothing.

There's still going to be a plenty of clothes left even if you were to buy half the sortiment.

Sorry for posting 6 days late, I was re-reading this thread and this post really stuck out to me, I just wanted to point out the fact that people less fortunate don't need True Religion jeans or high-end brands, chances are they dont even know they have a lot of value.

There's over pairs of jeans at any Goodwill here and I pick maybe 4 or 5 out of that. Theres a huge selection of clothes that any ol chap wouldn't mind wearing, I'm really not hurting anyone and or doing anything morally wrong. I think that was just his way of projecting his envy towards you. That's often a train of lazy people, finding reasons to bash others who are doing what they wish they'd done.

I appreciate your advice, and I agree there's nothing morally wrong about it - as someone who is 'poor' or in need would likely buy the cheapest clothes possible, and not those name-brands.

I assume even though it's goodwill, that the name-brand items would still be a bit more than their non-name-brand items. How much room do you want to see between Goodwill's price and the closed auctions to bother? That just doesnt seem worth it to me. I have a basket of new stuff I'd like to get rid off.

How often do you run into issues with crappy buyers? I used to sell on eBay semi-frequently, just getting rid of things I no longer wanted, but stopped because I got tired of dealing with customers. We don't really get access to a lot of the really nice rates because of our remoteness. I've always understood that USPS covers Alaska too, since its of course a state. I actually have had buyers in the past from Alaska that cost the same to ship to them as it would to ship to someone 10 miles away. I used to be a flipper, however in my area I am finding it very hard to find items that I can be profitable on.

Thrift stores here have total junk, and overpriced junk, minimum price for a pair of sweatpants for example is 4. To profit off something like this it would have to be an amazing brand, which never shows up here.

Also I would have to learn how to spot a fake so I don't get screwed or banned from ebay for selling fake goods. Garage sales, forget that anymore, everyone here that is having garage sales is charging MORE than ebay prices on most of their things, and I have proven that every time I look up an item, plus again, its total junk, I've actually found it cheaper to shop in the brand name stores with coupons and sales for clothing than to buy clothes at the SA, and cheaper to shop on ebay for certain items than it is to buy locally anymore plus buyer protection and whatnot this was not the case years ago, when I would come home with amazing hauls of just about everything from yard sales.

I know I have said it on reddit here before but the SA and Goodwill are not about providing people who have less income with clothing as they clearly charge too much for each item for a person who is very poor to be able to afford it.

SA and goodwill are now the hipster's places to shop, and not places people who can't afford clothing shop. I actually find I am doing better on perk TV using cheap cell phones, I am making money in the form of gift cards with little investment other than some cheap phones which have paid for themselves 3x over at least by now.

This does not require much time, travel expense or anything else. I can't afford a smartphone that uses data because that is just too expensive, especially if I am buying it for the sole purpose of using ebay. Plus my mother has a smartphone, and I am almost always with her when I am out.. I have spent way less then that on my entire setup of phones. I am also hesitant to purchase any items that won't sell, and most of the potential items I am finding have one that has sold high and the rest are not selling Some of the items I haven't been able to find on ebay at all.
