In Unity, Dawson Julia operates a 14,square-foot warehouse on a main road through town, with a sign that indicates the former dairy building is the home of East Coast CBDs. And up in Fort Kent, Steve Rusnack runs his businesses, Full Bloom Head Shop and Full Bloom Cannabis, out of a storefront on Main Street. All are medical marijuana caregivers, part of what was once a cottage industry that is now rapidly expanding as growers move from garages and basements into commercial spaces where they can cultivate more plants to serve a population of patients that has grown to as many as 48, statewide.

That competition, along with the need to cover operating expenses and a desire to provide medicine to more people, has prompted caregivers to invest in larger growing operations, diversify their products and find ways to increase the number of patients they serve.

Some have increased business — and revenue — by keeping a revolving list of patients, a practice that takes advantage of a gray area in state law but draws criticism from dispensaries and prompts inspections from the Department of Health and Human Services, which regulates the medical marijuana program.

Many caregivers in Maine are also poised to make the move into the recreational marijuana industry if voters in November approve Question 1, a citizen initiative that would legalize marijuana for adults and require that 40 percent of licenses to go to small-scale growers. Industry leaders in Maine believe the state is poised to become a leader in the billion-dollar cannabis market. With the legitimization of these small farms, local municipalities have seen their tax bases increase.

Formerly vacant buildings are being filled with a new, vibrant industry. That changed in , when amendments to the law allowed caregivers to serve up to five patients, not just their own family. Those changes allowed the program and the caregiver industry to expand as more patients sought alternatives to pharmaceuticals. The caregiver industry continued to evolve with a amendment to state law that allows caregivers to hire an employee. The number of individual caregivers jumped by more than 80 percent from to , to 2, caregivers.

Since then, the number of caregivers has increased to 2,, according to the Maine Medical Marijuana Program. The number of caregiver employees jumped by percent in , from 14 to Seventy-six of those employees were new, according to data provided by the Maine Medical Marijuana Program. There are now active registered caregiver employees. Kim Printy, executive director of the trade group Medical Marijuana Caregivers of Maine, said the revolving slot business model, where patients designate a caregiver only for the length of a single transaction, grew out of a desire by caregivers to serve more than five patients.

Efforts in the Legislature to remove the cap on patients have been unsuccessful. The exact number of patients is not tracked by the state, but 48, forms certifying people as patients have been printed by doctors in the past year. It is possible some of those forms were duplicate or replacement forms, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. State law says caregivers can have up to five patients at one time. Some caregivers say they use that flexibility to serve many patients in a day, while making sure that only five have designated them as the caregiver at one given time.

The patient can end the relationship whenever he or she wants. The patient then takes the designation form home, effectively ending the relationship. The Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the medical marijuana program, did not respond to several requests for comment. Tim Smale of the Maine Dispensary Operators Association declined to comment on the revolving slot business model, but dispensary representatives in the past have told legislators they have concerns about caregivers operating with less oversight and regulation than dispensaries.

Cannabidiol is one of two main ingredients in the marijuana plant but is non-psychoactive like tetrahydrocannabiniol, or THC. Julia and the other caregivers at East Coast CBDs now each keep four long-term patients and reserve their fifth spot as a revolving slot. Rusnack opened his storefront on Main Street in Fort Kent in May.

That minimum amount disenfranchises patients who are only buying a small amount of marijuana. Rusnack, 36, will be closely watching the results of the November legalization vote, as will Julia and Messer. Legal pot sales across the U.

Messer, of Brigid Farm in Saco, operates his business in a more traditional way than Julia and Rusnack. He and Caron try to keep the same patients for long periods of time, but say that can be tricky in a market where patients want the flexibility to use different caregivers and dispensaries. Caregivers Stephanie Caron and Brett Messer of Brigid Farm tend to marijuana plants inside their Saco business. We really want to be a model for compliance. Caron said Brigid Farm has expanded its line of products — ranging from various strains of bud to edibles like chocolate peanut butter balls — to keep patients from looking elsewhere.

They also make capsules and vape cartridges. The couple, who are engaged, moved into a 5,square-foot facility in Messer, 28, had become a licensed caregiver after graduating from college in with a degree in finance. Caron, 26, became a caregiver 15 months later. At first, they grew their plants in a residential setting, but needed to move into a bigger space if they wanted to cultivate the maximum 72 plants they are allowed to grow.

A year after moving into their industrial space, they added a commercial kitchen so they could expand their product line to include edibles. Their building, which has no signs on the outside and is guarded with an elaborate security system, includes several grow rooms, a space for processing harvested marijuana and the commercial kitchen.

Their patients never visit the facility, instead relying on deliveries from Messer. Messer said they could use additional employees if they were allowed to hire more. Messer, whose first exposure to medical marijuana dispensaries was in Colorado when he visited during college, is excited at the prospect of legalization of recreational marijuana, which he supports.

If voters say yes to a legal market, Messer and Caron plan to open a storefront.

In Sanford, the City Council recently approved zoning regulations for caregivers in commercial spaces after months of working with growers to understand their businesses.

There also has been increased scrutiny of the caregivers who have storefronts or keep a revolving list of patients. Julia says he and other caregivers like him have had multiple visits by inspectors from DHHS who want to count their plants and look at patient paperwork to make sure the caregivers are operating within the law. Most plants yield a quarter- to half-pound, giving caregivers the ability to produce more marijuana than their patients can buy.

Caregivers can now donate their excess to patients or surrender it to law enforcement, but Julia said the current rules also leave open the temptation for caregivers to divert marijuana to the black market. Roy McKinney, director of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, said his agency has discussions with DHHS when there are concerns about marijuana being diverted from the medical market.

Medical marijuana diversion has been a huge economic stimulus package for the drug culture, and all the drug dealers in Maine. There is no shortage of pot in Maine, and you know that. So stop with the marijuana cult madness that promotes usage of a narcotic drug and increases the size of the drug culture in Maine.

Maine is in the midst of a heroin epidemic. Laws that are in complete opposition to federal drug laws. Imagine what the country would look like today, if all these drugs were legal. The Democrats are leaning in that direction. The Obama Administration is on a campaign of letting drug dealers out of prison. Legalizing dope is an issue pushed by Democrats and some really flaky, hand-crank Ron Paul type Libertarians.

Look at what accommodating the drug culture has wrought! And both Janet Mills and Matt Dunlap took an oath of office that requires them to uphold state and federal laws. But they are pushing marijuana legalization in Maine instead, because that is the party line.

Had they held the line, heroin would have been better held in check in Maine. The Democrats already had a vote on legalizing dope back in when they put the legalize dope issue on their party platform. Look at the photos , not one piece of litter is on the floor. If any insects or diseases get into the crops , all plants can be wiped out and all lots of money lost. Most have the Ph of potting mix constantly monitored as well as the Ph of the water.

First of all , greenhouses grow in potting mixes , not soil. These mixes contain no macro or micro nutrients ,all these essential nutrients must be added in some form and at proper levels. Knowledge in Entomology and Plant Pathology , just to name a couple , are also important. Hybridization , Cloning , have become very important. Are they propagated sexually or asexually?

Are marijuana plants monecious or diecious? Do you smoke the male part of the plant or the female part , or both?? Growing under lights is far different than growing outside. The soil-less mix I mentioned is just one example. Air movement can result in disease and fungus problems if it is too stagnant and damp. Hours under grow lights are vital. I felt the same way in I was on the fast track to a big promotion at work, was enjoying the good life, and like you I had a lot of opinions that caused me to judge people for what they do, make comments about the right and wrong of things I really had no actual experience with.

Then one day in I was told I had cancer and needed immediate chemotherapy. At that point my life as I knew it came to a screeching halt. I began to research cannabis, and have continued to this day. You have some strange ideas about marijuana, and marijuana in the political process. It has been proven that cannabis has nothing like the health hazards associated with alcohol or tobacco, yet we allow adults to make their own decision regarding the consumption of both.

Maine already voted down legal marijuana, in , when Governor Paul LePage was reelected. By a vote at their convention the pro-dope Democrats put marijuana legalization on their party platform. The Democrats going public in for marijuana legalization was and remains one of the biggest political missteps ever in Maine politics.

Remarkably enough, an antiquated definition during prohibition of that narcotic love that describes what narcotics are, also included alcohol and cigarettes. Alcoholics love their booze. And smokers love their cigarettes.

I consider these narcotic-like drugs. And regardless that marijuana has no physically expressed addictive properties, the psychological dependence on the drug, like what you experience, creates in most users the desire to be stoned every day. Some, all the time, every waking moment.

You know the type of pothead I am referring to, real stoners would be the vernacular today. They are pitiful when young, appalling in middle age, and usually long since dead by the time they reach our age, many having jumped on the bandwagon of other narcotic drugs that are not so forgiving. Marijuana use among our youth is not entirely or exclusively the fault of parents. It is the fault of miscreants like you who lose their sense of civic responsibility and post online a drug-fueled advocacy of this dangerous, habit forming and psychologically addictive narcotic drug.

Both are destructive in society, and neither are productive in any social sense. Find something better to do. You are advocating breaking public laws about which you are obviously quite aware. Why not do something a little more productive with your remaining time?

I know several people that are on medicinal marijuana and the pros have far outweighed any negative side affects. For me cannabis is much easier to resist than alcohol or cigarettes , and I had my wild days when I was younger! OK Don , legalization of tobacco and alcohol are fine , but cannabis is not? On another note , and not to turn this into a foolish political , never ending debate , but I enjoyed your comment about LePage.

Your argument against alcohol and tobacco use are good ones. I suggest you continue to push for greater control of those common but also very harmful narcotic products. I would favor raising the minimum age for their purchase slowly over time until each is removed from the store shelves altogether because no one is left old enough who could legally still purchase these products. Alcohol prohibition did not work because it was put in place the wrong way, and the booze culture came to seem like something everyone should be doing.

THis Fall we will get to make Weed Legal and this will end the War on Pot in this State. WE will also see the benefits of new businesses, more people employed, and more State Revenues. The push for legalization this November has put a glaring spotlight on the money in the cannabis industry, as Mainers rightfully worry that out-of-State corporations have their eyes on our wonderful Maine cottage industry.

In just a few short years, conscientious Maine caregivers have studied, researched and documented a plethora of health conditions that cannabis can help, and have crafted formulations and preps to help an expanding patient base, ranging from very sick babies to our Elders in hospice care. This is the heart of caregiving in Maine. Maine has a robust self-designed and self-supported donation system! Maine is doing it the Maine Way, which is the Right Way!

And no its actually not that great. Just by reading this article and reviewing what was presented I can tell you that the caregivers shown are pretty incompetent. They might even be poisoning the clients they are serving. Absolutely they are very deep generations of growers here. However they all really took off when a couple changes happened. And lets be perfectly honest here my friend. Almost ALL of these multi-gen growers, especially the old timers were all outdoor growers that barely dabbled in the indoor except for breeding purposes and cloning purposes.

Both necessary for a good outdoor harvest. Indoor is completely different.

Maine has extremely limited indoor sophistication. It has come up ten fold in the last ten years. However I happen to know for a fact that some local con-artists that play at being big time masters and all this nonsense really just hustled and long-coned some very, very, very gifted people that had deep experience and education and training in a cross-industry setting.

I happen to know that when the local were done with said people they attacked like a pack of animals. Not all people growing are con-artists, hacks, and amateurish but their really is a great many of them. So we are talking pretty stupid people.
